“Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead, I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus” (Phi 3:13-14).

On this New Year’s Eve, Paul’s attitude is very instructive to us. First, he admitted that he had unfinished business, that he’d not arrived yet. Is that the case for you? Secondly, he resolved to bury old issues, to forget the past. Will you do likewise? Thirdly, he resolved to go for gold, to reach for the heavenly prize. Will you do that too? Now that is a powerful threefold New Year resolution. Happy Rosh Hashanah!
