“And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Phi 2:8).

There’s no way Jesus would pay the ultimate penalty for our rebellion against God if it was no big deal. The matter of our moral depravity is not a joke. The consequences of humanity’s wickedness are grave before God’s justice system to which we are all answerable. Contemporary society has watered down the tragedy of sin. Many abominable travesties have been renamed in more palatable terms. That doesn’t change the seriousness of our transgressions and iniquities before heaven’s impeccable court. Whenever you’re tempted to take sin lightly, think about the price God paid for our redemption. Whenever you’re lured to compromise, think about the unbearable affliction our Saviour endured for our pardon. If it doesn’t cause you to tremble, you’ve no idea what God did for you on the cross! If your heart doesn’t swell with gratitude, then you’ve no idea what terrible wrath you were spared!
