“No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you” (Jo 15:15).

To prove that He’s serious about genuine friendship with His disciples, Jesus explains that the quality of information He shares with them is the telltale sign. What distinguishes servants from friends is the level of confidentiality. There’s stuff that is only reserved for the closest of friends. Too many of us are proud to be servants of God. We shouldn’t be! We must thrive to rise to the friendship level with Christ. A classic illustration of this awesome principle is the personal debate the LORD has about whether or not to disclose His plans for Sodom and Gomorrah to Abraham. “And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do?” (Gen. 18:17). That Christ sent the Helper for the express purpose of revealing mysteries to us is further testimony that God takes the goal of friendship with us quite seriously ( 1 Cor.2:9-10). Oh how our lives would count for more and impact the world better if we lived as loyal friends of Jesus! Rise beyond servanthood to friendship with Christ.
