“And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?” (Jo 6:42).
It’s amazing that the folks who challenge Jesus’ claims in our text are the same ones who recognise His uniqueness so much that they are willing to seek Him out everywhere, across land and sea. They fail to transition to a higher level with God in part because they pride themselves in their familiarity with Jesus. Their familiarity with the Son of Man’s physical address and natural parentage robbed them of an appreciation of the presence of divinity right in their midst. Likewise, our acquaintance with church traditions, officials and the Scriptures can disable us from appreciating the presence of God by His Spirit among us. We should not take church for granted, nor the ministry of the word, worship and the sacraments. Expect God to reveal mysteries and to bless your life exceptionally whenever you read His word, or engage in any spiritual discipline. You’ll continue to grow and your walk with Christ will remain fresh.
