“‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realising that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked” (Rev 3:15-17).

Halfhearted devotion is dangerous because it’s not obvious to its sufferers. In fact, most Christians today are dangerously lukewarm and don’t even know it! For instance, in our text, there’s a vast difference between the Lord’s verdict and the Laodiceans’ self assessment. While God considers them nauseatingly lukewarm, they consider themselves rich, prosperous and self-sufficient. Beloved, a neutral mindset leads to self-deception! A complacent attitude makes us blind to our sinfulness, misery, spiritual poverty, ignorance and nakedness. Consequently, we can’t repent of our errant ways and obtain deliverance from our sorry state. Then we become liable to divine rejection. God forbid! Let us henceforth be definitely “hot” in Christ. Please help us Holy Spirit!
