“Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word” (Isa 66:5a).

So-so saints just tolerate the word of God. That means they know its worth sufficiently not to totally ignore it, but they are not enthused over it. Others take the word like bitter medicine. That means they know that they need it for their inner healing, so they only take just enough “dosage”, and no more. However, spiritually red-hot Christians tremble at God’s word. That means they take the word seriously. They recognise it as authoritative and necessary for their survival, success and relevance. Fervent disciples are not fooled by gimmicks, euphoria or hype. Behind the letters of Scripture they hear the voice of the Spirit (see 2 Cor. 3:6). In the voice of the preacher, they hear the very oracles of God (see 1 Pet 4:11). In the lyrics of worship songs, they hear the word of Christ (see Col. 3:16). They are swift to hear, believe and practice the word of God (Jam. 1:19, 22). Let that be your portion!
