“Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy” (1 Cor. 14:1).

To review, we’ve seen that spiritual fluency can be developed by continually being refilled with the Holy Spirit (Ep 5:18) and making God’s love your primary ministry driving force (1 Cor. 14:1).

The third way we can sharpen our spiritual fluency is by earnestly desiring spiritual gifts. As a rule, if you don’t ask you don’t receive, if you don’t seek you will not find, if you don’t knock, the door shan’t be opened (Mat 7:7). Note that to desire (zēloute) as used in our text is to be zealous or enthusiastic. Don’t say, “If God wants me to have it, He will give me”.

Beloved, why would God entrust into your life spiritual gifts you don’t really care about? Why would He ‘waste’ precious Kingdom resources? Please don’t be hasty to conclude that certain spiritual gifts are not your portion. You’ll be amazed by the Father’s readiness to exceed your requests and thoughts (Ep 3:20)!
