“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together” (Rom 8:16-17).
It’s not possible for us to really understand who we are and what we have in Christ without supernatural enlightenment. The necessary illumination cannot be accomplished at a mental level. It has to be Spirit-to-spirit, God’s-to-ours. Without that, we’ll continue to function as mere men (compare 1 Cor. 3:3).
Per today’s text, our identity has three levels. Today we have time to explore only the first level. In the first place, we are now God’s children. That is an awesome revelation on its own, beloved. Among other things, it means we share our Heavenly Father’s identity. Our rebirth earned us the rights and authority to become children of God (Jo 1:12). We share His spiritual genes, traits and characteristics. His lifeblood runs in our veins. We are partakers of the divine nature whether or not we feel it (2 Pet 1:4). Even the demonic world can recognise those who belong to the heavenly family (Acts 19:15). It also follows that Abba, Father is responsible for our provision and protection. God is the ultimate, loving, infinitely wealthy, responsible and wisest Father ever.
Therefore, we shouldn’t behave as though our destiny and livelihood are entirely in our hands. It grieves God when His children worry and struggle as though He’s not able to help or as though He doesn’t care. He does, beloved! See Mat 6:8.
