“Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy” (1 Cor. 14:1).

Much harm is done when people operate in gifts without caring about their effects on others. Vocal and revelation gifts can often be used to harm rather than help others, if due regard to their impact on recipients is not paid.

The order of pursuit in our text is important, brethren. The overarching motivation for all ministry and interaction should be God’s love. Because ministry that flows from genuine love builds the church (1 Cor. 14:5b). In fact, the charismata are designed to function in a loving milieu–nothing less! Therefore, we have no right to seek spiritual gifts before seeking the fruit of the Spirit. We must cherish both and chase after both. Then we’ll truly contribute to the health and growth of the church.
