Revelation 2:26-27
26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

While the idea of having dominion on earth makes sense, what seems unseemly at face value is “ruling the nations with a rod of iron and breaking them to shivers as the vessels of a potter”. On the surface, that sounds unduly harsh, unloving and unChristian! However, when you consider the potter metaphor it all begins to add up. To start with, potters don’t just break up their handiwork anyhow and aimlessly. Their goal is to remake quality products according to the maker’s design. Only products that haven’t turned out as beautifully and as correctly as intended are destroyed with a view to remoulding them. Now, let’s face it, our societies haven’t turned out as the Maker intended, have they? The order, beauty, justice, love and peace God intended for the world isn’t happening. We need to remake the world. How wonderful that God partners with us in reshaping human society and civilisation! Only when we follow Jesus faithfully to the end.
