Revelation 4:5a
And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices.

A few verses ago we learnt that God repaints our faith-world in colourful high definition as we study and meditate upon His inspired Word. Likewise, today’s text is about the power of the sounds of heaven. Our spirituality shouldn’t just be visual; it must also be audial. In the animal kingdom, the roar of a lion strikes terror in the heart of every prey, rival and shepherd (see Isaiah 31:4). Similarly, the heavenly flashes of lightning, the resonant voices and peals of thunder in our text are a pledge to God’s people that He will soon inflict dire punishments upon all their persecutors. It’s a sign that although believers may appear vulnerable on earth, the Sovereign Lord can and shall mightily triumph for them. We may be mere sheep, but our Shepherd is the Lion of Judah! Hannah too had this revelation, “The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them” (1 Sam 2:10). Compare how the Lord made the hosts of the Syrians to flee “the noise of a great host” when the four lepers advanced towards the army camp (2 Kings 7:6). Let every satanic adversary in your life tremble at the roar of the Lion of Judah! Let the LORD thunder with a great thunder upon and discomfit every “Philistine” in your life (1 Sam 7:10). Whatever you go through, rest assured that greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world!
