Revelation 5:2
Then I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?”
In government circles, certain documents are specially sealed and labelled CONFIDENTIAL. This usually applies to information whose unauthorised disclosure could result in exceptionally grave danger to the nation. In such cases, only authorised officials are entitled to open the documents.
Now then, the mighty angel’s question in our text is of infinitely greater import. It’s the eternal question. The perfectly sealed, top secret document in question here does not contain information pertaining to one nation’s affairs. Rather it holds the destiny of the entire world, the consummation of human history, the culmination of God’s agenda for the universe.
The Hebrew Bible informs us that centuries previously, God had ordered the protection of this prophetic message: “But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end” (Dan 12:4a).
Although the “time of the end” has arrived, only the divinely authorised official qualifies to open the divinely protected document. Beloved, nobody but Jesus Christ fits the bill!
Who else has the right and capacity to approach the unapproachable light where the Father dwells? Who else has the audacity to pluck the sevenfold sealed book from the Father’s right hand? No angel, prophet or guru is worthy, beloved. Nobody but Jesus fits the bill!
