2 Thessalonians 2:13
But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
Having outlined the tragic steps people take towards damnation, our text now explains why true believers will make it to the end.
It is noteworthy, to start with, that the Bible doesn’t attribute our survival to our efforts, but to God’s initiative. We will make it because we are His beloved. Don’t underestimate the power of knowing that you are loved of God.
Secondly, we’ll make it because it is God who chose us. In our pride we tend to exaggerate our decision to follow Jesus, and understate that He chose us. Beloved, long before we came to our senses and returned to God, He had already set His sights on us, as the Prodigal Son’s father did.
Thirdly, He saved us through sanctification of the Spirit and our believing the truth. Notice that our role is just to believe. His is to love, choose, sanctify and save. There’s no question about who gets the credit. And there’s no question about Who will help us make it to the end–as long as we believe!
