Revelation 20:12
And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.

Our world today is crazy about books and records, facts and figures, visual and audial. Some folks are shocked when they can’t find their friend on Facebook or other social media.

However, marvellous though these media are, only one book matters in eternity. As we all shall stand before the Great White Throne of God’s judgment, there will be no guesswork and no escape. For two sets of books shall be opened.

First will be the General Book, which records the works of all. None of our deeds–good or evil, just or unjust, worthy or shameful–escape heaven’s notice (see Dan 12:2, John 5:29). God keeps detailed records of the words and works of all humanity.

Secondly, the Book of Life shall be opened. Also called the Lamb’s Book of Life, this is the special database in heaven where believers’ names are written. Only those who have allowed Christ’s gracious work for and in them are recorded therein. “And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Rev 20:15).

No wonder Jesus counselled His disciples after great exploits for God, “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). Being and staying in that particular book should be our top priority, beloved. Nothing else matters!
