But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
Firstly, this disclaimer rebukes our complacency, lest we forget God’s holy standards. Who doesn’t want to be part of such a success story? Yet entrance into this great city is not automatic. We cannot live anyhow and hope to inherit heaven anyway!
Secondly, this disclaimer is a rebuke to the doctrine of universal reconciliation. This heresy avers that every human being will eventually be reconciled to God due to His love and mercy. Beloved, that’s not what the Bible actually says!
There’s no indication whatsoever that the Lake of Fire is reversible. There’s no room for another resurrection after the Second Death, beloved. Therefore, for our own sakes, and for the sake of all our loved ones, let us take heed.
Note that sometimes the Word of God presents us with checklists in order to aid our walk of faith. Although we know that we must live righteous lives, often we need clarity about what that means in practice. Like bitter medicine, meditating on and praying over such checklists will heal our wayward hearts. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Why delay?
