1 Corinthians 12:8a
For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom.

In our quest to worship the Father in Spirit and truth (John 4:24) as well as not to be ignorant of spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12:1), today we commence a new series of gift-by-gift reflections. May all cobwebs and confusion be cleared and may you fully embrace our rich spiritual heritage.

Word of Wisdom is the first of three gifts known as Revelation Gifts, because they all reveal something. The other revelation gifts–namely word of knowledge and discerning of spirits– will be discussed separately.

Note that the Word of Wisdom must not be confused with natural wit, cleverness or intelligence. It’s also totally different from developed or augmented wisdom, philosophy or prudence. Rather this gift is a word (logos) or message imparted by the Holy Spirit to a believer for a specific occasion.

Word of Wisdom is a distinct, separate and single manifestation that reveals God’s purpose in a particular matter or case. It can also be described as an inspired application of knowledge in given situations or problems. It also operates as a special insight into the deeper significance of gospel truths and their correct application. Simply put, it is a God-given solution to difficult situations.

This gift is quite useful in the following situations: anointed preaching (see 1 Cor. 1:21; 2:4-5), biblical interpretation (see Luke 24:45-47), resolution of church disputes (see Acts 15:28), personal decisions (see Ps 119:105), pastoral care (see Deut. 3:28) and in dealing with interrogations (Luke 21:14-15), among others. May the Word of Wisdom manifest in your life whenever and wherever it’s needed!
