1 Corinthians 12:9b
To another gifts of healing by the one Spirit

By definition, Gifts of Healing refers to the ability to serve as a human instrument through whom God supernaturally cures illnesses and restores health. This is the second Gift of Power. Note that it is described in plural form, as Gifts of Healing (charismata iamatōn). The wording suggests that the Spirit enables believers to administer healing according to the particular illnesses present.

Given that all sorts of diseases, illnesses and conditions–organic ailments, functional disability as well as psychosomatic ills–afflict humans, it makes sense that the Holy Spirit releases graces (anointing) to match the variety of problems we face. The emphasis is not on one human “healer” of all illnesses.

Rather, Yahweh Ropheka remains “the Lord who heals you” (Exodus 15:26). God is the One who forgives all our iniquities and heals all our diseases (Psalm 103:3). Thus this gift serves to bring glory to God, never for man’s credit (see Acts 3:11-16). It’s all about His grace.

“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed” (1 Pet 2:24). Let us continue to trust God for our own and others’ healing, on account of Christ’s atonement.
