Psalm 40:8
I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.

Previously we learnt that your spiritual gifts reflect your God-given assignment on earth. Today we learn that, all things being equal, your passions also reflect God’s will for your life.

We say “all things being equal” because we are specifically referring to those desires, emotions and passions which the Holy Spirit generates in your heart and life because you delight in Him (Ps 37:4). These passions are totally different from carnal ambition.

Rightly applied, the notion that we must always follow our hearts is valid. When the Word of God is hidden in our hearts, our hearts delight to do the will of God. We end up having desires born of the Spirit.

When you’re walking well with Christ by His Spirit, what you love to do is related to your assignment. What you hate reflects what God wants you to correct. Often that which provokes your compassion indicates where God wants you to give.

When you’re truly walking with Jesus, never ignore the various nudges, desires and passions the Spirit provokes in your heart. They reflect God’s will for you. They reflect your earthly assignment. Follow your heart.
