1 John 4:6
We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Today’s passage portrays two contrasting spiritual influences in the church. The first is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth. He is the One who inspires servants of God to lead and minister in the name of Jesus. That is why godly people are happy to listen to Christ’s ministers. They have an affinity for the word of truth from the Spirit of truth through true ministers.

On the contrary, a spirit of error also exists. That is the influence that blinds sinners and deceives unsuspecting believers. It’s a spirit of lies. Note that the Bible says in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils (1 Tim 4:1). That is why many folks are deceived. When such demonic spirits are in control, people resist the truth, shun true preachers and follow heresies. That is not your portion!

Now, according to our text, what your ears itch to hear indicates which spirit is operating in your life. That’s a sobering thought, brethren! If we desire to keep serving God in Spirit and Truth, we should audit our hearts from time to time. Check whether you are drawn to God’s Word through His servants or otherwise.

When you find yourself hostile to genuine servants of Christ beware! For resistance to the genuine Gospel is diabolical. Don’t think it’s ok or normal to disobey true servants of God. It’s not. Disobedience is not as harmless as people think. It is demonic. The nature of your appetite depends on the spiritual influence over your life. The Spirit of truth gives you a hunger for God’s Word. He also gives you an affinity for Christ’s servants. May that be your portion!
