Luke 17:32
Remember Lot’s wife.

This is one of the shortest verses in the Bible. But it is power-packed. Now, why does the Lord Jesus specifically tell us to remember Lot’s wife? What is it about her story and fate we should draw vital lessons from, centuries later?

Beloveds, let us remember that Mrs Lot lost out because she DISOBEYED the instruction to not LOOK BACK. So in fact she committed two related blunders. She disobeyed and she looked back. For the angels’ instruction had been very clear, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed” (Genesis 19:17).

Mrs Lot disobeyed quite probably because the angels’ instruction did not seem to be that serious. It didn’t seem to be a big deal. What harm could there be in just glancing back a little bit? So she thought.

My dear friend, in the same manner it is quite easy for you and I to downplay the importance of obeying God’s simple instructions today. It is quite easy for us to water down the gravity of God’s Word today. We can easily nullify the commands of God by our opinions and traditions (see Mat 15:6). God forbid!

In the same vein, it is also quite easy to overlook the CONSEQUENCES of disobedience. Like Mrs Lot, we also can assume that the stated penalties for non-compliance with God’s will are empty threats. Otherwise, if she truly believed that she would be destroyed if she looked back, why would she go ahead and do it? In all likelihood, she just took the threat of destruction lightly.

Think about it. Let us examine ourselves today concerning what may appear to be “minor” disobedience. It’s not up to us to measure the weight or worth of God’s commandments! That is pride of the highest magnitude, beloveds. Stop diluting the weight of God’s commands and the gravity of rebellion. Your and my duty is to simply trust and obey God. There’s no other way.
