And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
So far we have established that the first secret behind the early church’s Pentecostal success was their investment in TIME. The second secret implied in Scripture is their investment in TRUST.
In other words they believed that God would do what He promised. So they waited for the Father’s Promise (the Holy Spirit) with expectancy. They did not deviate from the goal. They did not get distracted. They did not get tired. They never gave up. All they did was to PUSH-pray until something happens. They implicitly trusted the Holy Spirit to fill them all without exception. And He did!
How about you my dear friend? Do you trust the Holy Spirit to empower you like never before? Do you trust Him to give you various gifts of the Spirit as He sees fit? Do you trust Him to manifest the fruit of the Spirit in and through you? Remember that without faith (trust) it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).
Sadly, many Christians today are afflicted by the sin of unbelief and don’t even know it! How can you tell? There are several signs. One sign of mistrust or unbelief is GIVING UP. When you stop expecting God to bless you or answer your prayers, unbelief has crept in. When you lose all hope of ever experiencing the fruit and gifts of the Spirit at a deeper level, unbelief has set in. Please beware.
Another sign of unbelief is STAGNATION. By this we mean settling for the barest minimum doses of spiritual gifts. For instance, you may have spoken in tongues briefly when you received the baptism in the Spirit. So you hold on to those few words the Spirit enabled you to utter back then. So for years and years you repeat exactly the same phrases. You stop trusting Him for more. Your gift doesn’t grow. You limit God unawares. This applies to other spiritual gifts as well.
Yet another sign of mistrusting the Holy Spirit is FEAR. Some folks are more afraid of receiving the devil’s gifts than they are trustful of receiving the Holy Spirit’s true gifts. So their fear trumps their faith. Their doubts prevent their breakthrough. Let that not be your portion! Yet the Lord Jesus assures us that if our evil earthly parents know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more our good and gracious Heavenly Father (Luke 11:13)?
A final sign of mistrust we’ll discuss today is FAKING IT. I know this is quite shocking but it’s a real temptation for all believers. In the past I witnessed situations where “prophets” coached some desperate saints how to speak in tongues! Such poor souls are robbed of the privilege of speaking in genuine tongues as the Spirit gives them the ability (Acts 2:4). The Holy Spirit cannot give them genuine gifts when they are holding on to fake gifts. God cannot bless them when they are playing religious games. Lord have mercy!
My dear friend, I plead with you to revive your total trust in the Holy Spirit today. Trust Him sincerely to fill you afresh with His power. Trust Him to enable you to operate in various gifts and to manifest all the fruit of the Spirit. Never give up. Never compromise. Don’t settle for less. Don’t think you’re not worthy. GOD is not a respecter of persons (Acts 10:34). That means He doesn’t discriminate. The Holy Spirit is for ALL those the Lord calls into His kingdom (Acts 3:39). That includes YOU! Pastor Josh
