Matthew 17:20
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
On face value, the Lord’s explanation here sounds confusing. For He says the reason why the disciples couldn’t cast out the demon was their insufficient or little faith. But then He goes on to declare that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed, they would move mountains and nothing would be impossible for them. Isn’t that a contradiction?
Not at all! What’s the difference between inadequate faith and mountain-moving faith? One main difference is that the latter is LIVING FAITH while the former is dead faith. You see, the power of a seed has nothing to do with its size, but with its life. It’s not about its quantity but about its quality.
Initially, when you plant a seed, it seems like nothing is happening for a few days. Then it begins to germinate. Eventually the mustard seed becomes a huge tree. A tiny seed produces a giant tree. Why? Because of the life God packed into it. Because of the instructions (DNA) God gave it. It might be small, but it’s packed with life and specific instructions about the kind of tree it must produce.
So it is with living faith. It may seem insignificant to a casual observer. But its potential is enormous. True faith is seed-like. It’s alive. It’s God-given. It produces after its kind. It always produces results. It accomplishes great things. That’s what it means to move mountains.
On the other hand, “little faith” is dead faith. It’s nominal faith. It’s only verbal. It’s just religious. It’s artificial. It’s “trying one’s luck”. It’s ritual. It’s fake. It’s gimmicks. That is not true faith, beloveds! Many things we call faith nowadays are imitation faith. Fake faith doesn’t move mountains. Not even anthills!
Dear saint, is your faith alive? Let us have true, seed-like faith that achieves great things this year. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you in this regard. Let the word of God develop authentic faith in your heart. Say no to ritual faith. Say no to nominal faith. Say no to dead faith. Say no to fake faith. Let us start planting seeds of true faith everyday. Then a whole lot of mountains will vanish from our lives. Impossibilities will become possibilities. Hallelujah!
