Deuteronomy 17:18-20
18 “When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. 19 He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the LORD his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees. 20 This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel.
This passage, where God instructs new leaders (kings) to write personal copies of the word of God for themselves, is greatly instructive to all of us as kings and priests in the New Covenant. If you and I intend to grasp, as well as live by, the principles of God’s holy word, then we should not only hear and read the word, but we must also WRITE IT DOWN.
Nowadays it’s even easier to implement this principle because we can write in notebooks, and we can also type Bible lessons and nuggets onto our smart phones and/or laptops. Whatever is convenient, I urge you to adopt the practice of always capturing the word of God (from your pastors’ sermons, Bible studies, and personal devotions).
Why? First, somebody said “to write is to think”. That means writing things down helps us to process them better in our minds. So, don’t deny yourself the power of thinking deeply about the word of God through writing it down. Second, someone else said “the faintest pen is sharper than the best memory”. So, writing things down assists us to remember them better.
Friends, in this world where we write a lot of texts, WhatsApp messages, emails, et cetera, that have nothing to do with our spiritual growth and success, we must change the balance! Let us write more about God. Let us capture more of His word. That’s what New Covenant kings and priests do. Have a blessed day!
