“The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people…” (1 Sam 13:14).

What impressed God about David’s leadership wasn’t his charisma, competence or cleverness. It wasn’t the promising leader’s personal ambition or drive. Instead, it was David’s pursuit of God’s heartbeat that counted. To be “after God’s own heart” is to be concerned about what concerns God, to share His burden and to follow His passion. It’s not about wanting stuff from God. Does your soul yearn for God “as the dear pants for the water”? If you do, that will set you up for divine recognition and authority. It’s only when our hearts follow and connect with God’s heart that we are ready for more responsibility. Let’s pray that God raises such leaders among us today. And pray that God begins with you. Amen?
