“Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that” (Mar 7:13).
There is no question about the potential effect of God’s Word in the believer’s life. We understand that the Word is living and sharper than a double-edged sword capable of penetrating to the deeper dimensions of our inner man (He 4:12). We understand that the Word is profitable and able to inform, correct, train and equip the saints for every good work (2 Tim 3:16-17). Now why doesn’t the Word work for and in us more effectively? Our Lord singles out tradition as one of the key nullifiers of the Word, among others. Tradition refers to an established or customary pattern of thought or behaviour. To nullify the Word is to invalidate, neutralise or render it ineffective in your life. Today let’s ask the Holy Spirit to reveal our harmful traditions and help us to abandon the behavioural and thought patterns that negate the Word’s impact in our lives. Let’s allow the Word to bless, heal and transform us fully.
