“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together” (Rom 8:16-17).
The second level of our identity revealed in our text is that we are heirs of God. That means we are entitled to some of God’s property and assets at least. Our only qualification is our relationship with Him. Imagine!
The third level develops the second further. We are not just heirs of God, but His heirs on par with our Redeemer–we’re coheirs with Christ. Now, that’s the ultimate level of heirship. Since Jesus is one with, coeternal and coequal with the Father, He owns everything God owns. Therefore we also own everything of God! Compare 1 Cor. 3:21-22. Let this revelation blow away every trace of unbelief, fear and anxiety. Let faith, joy and confidence flood our hearts!
